We will serve our purpose of facilitating hospitality by providing tools where hosts can offer help in the form of opportunities, as well as visitors can ask for it, and the tools in place to allow them to meet easily. We believe that the best way to make that happen is to have hosts describe the resources and activities they are willing to offer, which we call "opportunities", and the travelers to post about their travel plans.
While other networks are focused on asking for hosting (couch), which is initiated by the visitor, we prefer to move the focus to the host and let the host primarily offer opportunities to visitor. The host is giving value to the network so we want to help the host to make good choices, choose the guests, and take the initiative. We want to empower the hosts.
When you decide to offer your hospitality, you can choose among several options. You may be offering shelter (couch, floor space, guest room, guest house, boat, RV, etc), and/or you may be willing to help with other things, like laundry, information, meeting for a drink, free bicycle, sports gear, showing something interesting in the city, etc. Some hosts don't mind picking up or dropping off a guest at the train station, airport, or bus stop, while other hosts would prefer a guest that is more independent. Some hosts like to cook meals together, while others would prefer that you stay out of the kitchen. The opportunities allow the host to describe exactly what is being offered.
Once you register yourself as a host by creating opportunities, you can also browse the list of visitors to your hometown and to your current location. We do not use hosting status ("hosting", "maybe hosting", or "not available"". In our view every opportunity is a "maybe" because it depends on the host liking the profile of the guest and also circumstances. A guest should never be expecting that a stranger will necessarily accept a request.
When you, the host, look at the list of visitors to your area, it will show you a 'reputation index', which is an aggregate of all the info we have about the guest: The quality of the reviews available, the networks the person is connected to, and how many connections that person has within our network, and behavioral statistics. Clicking on a profile shows the travel plan, with additional information that is designed to help you make a decision.
